Spiritual Messengers

Merfolk that have had the opportunity to swim with dolphins agree that it is a very special experience. Dolphins love to swim with merfolk and humans as much as we love swimming with them.

Our friends the dolphins appear in many cultures and tales of folklore. From Ancient Greece to India to Native America, the dolphin is admired by all.

In the article, Dolphins: Spiritual Messengers from the Sea, Laura Hamilton discusses how dolphins can teach us a number of ways to improve our spiritual nature. Perhaps we need to take life a little less seriously.

Check out the entire article over at Psychic Universe.

Snow Mermaid
Mermaid Marla

You might think that mermaids would only be found in warmer climates, but that is not the case. Mermaid Marla, who we met back in April 2012, reminds us that merfolk CAN take the cold weather.

As always, you can click on the photo for a larger view.

Let me pass Marla a cup of hot chocolate while I remind everyone to send me your mermaid news and photos. They will appear in future blog posts, and you will be micro-famous!

Two Headed Shark

Just today I ran across this story from io9. The title of the article says it all, Fisherman finds a bull shark with two heads.

Read the article by George Dvorsky in the Holy Crap WTF section of io9.

Mako Mermaids

The time has come to revisit Mako Mermaids, the spin-off of the Australian television program, H2O: Just Add Water. More information has become available, though we don't have a lot at this point.

When I first talked about the series, back in February of 2012, it was known as Mako: Island of Secrets. After going through three name changes, they have settled on Mako Mermaids.

The series centers around the mysterious Mako Island that turned Emma, Cleo, and Rikki into mermaids in the first episode of H2O: Just Add Water. Mako Mermaids will feature three new mermaids (Sirena, Lyla, and Nixie) that have the task of guarding Mako Island. All is well until a teenage boy by the name of Zac decides to camp out on the island.

In the Wikipedia article on the show, it is said that Zac turns into a merman in the Mako Island moon pool, the same way that the H2O girls did. The article states that Zac will have a fish-tail when in merman form, not simply fin-like feet as we heard back in early 2012. This is very good news.

Mako Mermaids is the product of producer Jonathan M. Shiff, and will be shown on Network 10 in Australia. According to the Wikipedia article, the first episode will be shown in May of 2013. No word on when the series might reach the US.

In the second episode, the three mermaids find their legs and go on land. This is slightly disappointing to me, though probably necessary. There are few mermaid themed shows/films in which the mermaids never transform into 'humans'.

The 2.5 minute Mako Mermaids trailer will certainly 'wet' your appetite for more!

Protecting Sharks

Actor Kyle Chandler from Friday Night Lights and his daughter Sawyer led supporters in Austin, Texas recently in promoting legislation to protect sharks as well as exotic pets and shelter animals. Sawyer and her friend Sam spoke of their passion to protect sharks.

Kyle, Sawyer, and Sam are also pushing for a ban on the buying and selling of shark fins.

It is always great to see kids take on this type of project with a passion! Help them spread the word that our shark friends need protection!

Sawyer Chandler has created a web site to help get the word out, and Ellen Degeneres is on board as well.

A related article is available at The Dallas Morning News web site, but membership is required to see the entire article.

The Mermaid Story

Don Severance, known to many as 'Sev', is a man of many talents. He is a New Hampshire based musician, sculptor, and author to name a few.

Sev has recently released the novel, The Mermaid Story: Epyphany. The novel is currently available on Amazon. This is the first title of a trilogy, so we will be seeing more from Sev.

"In the first year of the new millennium, a real mermaid is born - her name is Epyphany and she is the last hope for a suffering planet." You can read the full description at the Amazon link, above.

One reader said, "I gave this five stars because I could not put the book down."  Another said, "Don's talent is clear and his potential as a writer outstanding." There is no doubt that you will be entertained.

More information on the story can be found at the official web site. You can learn more about Sev at his main web site, where you can listen to samples of his music. You can also take a look at his other projects.

Click on the photo to the right for a larger view.

"Epyphany is the first book of a three book series called The Mermaid Story Trilogy. It is the fulfillment of an idea I had in 1999. At that time I was refining my skills as a sculptor. It was 4:00 AM and I woke up with an idea for a unique mermaid sculpture. I knew I didn't want her to look like the traditional image we have all grown to expect. I wanted her to be an authentic creature of the sea. As I considered the design I pondered the possibilities of her origin. How might such a creature have been conceived? What characteristics would she retain from her unique origin? If she was a mystical leap upward on the evolutionary ladder, what powers might she have? As is often the case questions lead to more questions and a story started to evolve. Over the years I continued to visit the idea and started writing more details and adding characters. In 2008, I redesigned my lifestyle slightly in order to allow for more creative time. So now it's 2013 and though the final sculpture of Epyphany is not quite finished, the story is well imagined and ready to share. I hope you have as much fun reading the story of Epyphany and her adventures as I had writing it. If you enjoy the story please share it with friends." -Don 'Sev' Severance

Sev is also a mermaid fan, in case there was any doubt in your mind. Best of luck on the trilogy, Sev, and we will be looking forward to hearing about the second installment!

Octopus Decor

For many modern mermaids, mermen and mermaid fans, you are not able to spend as much time in or near the water as you would like. The weather often does not cooperate, and the boss really expects you to be at work.

When you can't be near the sea, bring the spirit of the sea to you... with an octopus chandelier. According to a recent article on io9, the octopus chandelier adds the right touch of tentacle to any decor.

How do you bring the spirit of the sea into your home? Send me a photo or two!

Snow Maiden

Severe storms have blanketed many parts of the United States with snow this winter. Many folks were without power for over a week.

The snow became the inspiration for a little mermaid magic at the home of pianist Louis Landon. I am told that the creature sitting in The Chair is a 'Snermaid'.

Louis Landon is no stranger to mermaids. His CD, Solo Piano for Love, Peace and Mermaids was released in 2010. It was mentioned in my very first blog post back in December of 2011.

Mr. Landon's latest work is entitled Peaceful Solo Piano from the Heart, and it was released in October of 2012.

For a larger view of the Snermaid, click on the photo. If you see other Snermaids, please send me a photo!

Interspecies Internet

In last week's blog post, I remarked that we could learn a lot from dolphins, if only we could find a common language. It appears that Internet visionary Vint Cerf has already been thinking about that very thing.

Mr. Cerf is proposing an 'Interspecies Internet', where humans and other species may communicate.

Catch the entire article on C|Net by Dara Kerr, and start thinking about what YOU would ask a dolphin!

Found You

We all remember the Giant Squid articles from the past few months, and the Discovery Channel special at the end of January.

The latest squid news is a short article by Jamie Condliffe on Gizmodo. Jamie points us to a YouTube video in which scientist Edith Widder tells us how they finally found the giant squid.
