Siren on Freeform

Coming to Freeform TV in late March, 2018 is Siren, a thriller where mermaid legends come to life.

The two-hour series premiere airs on March 29th, but you can watch the official trailer now on the program's web page.

"Siren is based on a story by Eric Wald and Dean White who both serve as executive producers."

One look at the trailer, and it is clear that this series is not like the ones you have watched in the past.

Paper Mermaids

The Quint shares with us the story of an Ahmedabad (western India) artist that has created beautiful 'Mermaids in Sarees' out of paper.

Parth Kothekar loves mermaids, and has developed a talent for paper cutting, an artform originally from China.

"One day, while making graffiti, I imagined stencils in their reverse forms. I followed the idea and was fascinated by my own work."

The article includes a number of examples of the artist's work.

Underwater Santa

The Seoul Aquarium recently celebrated Christmas with an underwater Santa, who was found swimming with mermaids and manta rays.

You can share in the fun with this photo collection found at Global Times China.

A Historic Tail

The Weeki Wachee Springs State Park mermaid show in Florida is seventy years old! In an article found at Smithsonian Magazine, we learn more about the history of the show. The article contains a number of great photos, some from as far back as the late 1940s when the shows began.

"Today, they’re never seen in the water without their tails, but in the early days of the show, 'mermaids' often performed in nothing but a swimsuit and flippers."

Thank you, Kat Eschner and The Smithsonian, for the informative article.

"Quite possibly the most realistic mermaid dining experience yet, the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant is an enchanting eatery which has been completely submerged in water."

How often do you get to dine 16-feet below sea level?

Sessa Nulma

I was playing music last weekend from an Enya inspired channel on Amazon Music. One song in particular caught my attention, 'Sessa Nulma' by David Arkenstone and Charlee Brooks.

The title of the song looked like words from the Mermish dialect we use in Second Life. This is the one by Francine Rose from her book, The Secret World of Mermaids. If that were true, then the title of the song would mean, 'Mermaid Love'.

So, I paid a visit to Metro Lyrics, and found the song entitled, "Sessa Nulma (Mermaid Love)". Mermish may be more widely known than I thought!

A new tune to add to your mermaid playlist.

Large Mermaid Gathering

A big wave and splash to the Festival of the Sea, recently held in Bexhill, England. The goal of the festival was to set a new world record for the number of merfolk in one place. The number to beat was 300.

Was the group successful? Watch this short video on Buzzfeed to find out.

A friendly note to cell-phone videographers... Please, no more vertical videos.

Mermaids Excite

The Silverton Casino in Las Vegas, home of the 2011 mermaid convention, has a sizable aquarium. Mermaids can often be found swimming in the aquarium, posing for selfies and having a splashing good time.

Check out the video and photo collection found at the Las Vegas Review Journal.

Move Over Unicorn

Over at the Project Nursery blog by Katie Kavulla, we find out once again that unicorns are out, and mermaids are in.

"With this girly twist on nautical room decor, you can easily build an entire nursery around mermaids or just add a touch of this trend to your existing design."

Dive right in and decorate!

A Mermaid’s Tale

In a review found at OnScreen, Ben Halford does not give 'A Mermaid's Tale' high marks, although he really seems to want to.

"Oftentimes it’s clumsy and flawed to comical levels. But thankfully it’s also not appalling."

Read the review, which includes the movie's official trailer, and then decide for yourself. A Mermaid's Tale is available now on DVD, Blu_Ray, and digital download. Run-time is 1.5 hours.

Safety Essentials

Mermaid swimming instructor Nicole Wildman knows that becoming a mermaid is more than putting on a tail and diving into the deep end.

In an article by Jennifer Gardner for the Charleston Gazette-Mail, we learn a number of Nicole's safety tips for mermaid swimmers. There is also a link to Nicole's Facebook page, with information on her swimming classes for children.

"Swimming with a tail is much harder than it looks, Wildman said, which is why she is teaching little girls and boys how to safely swim in a fin."

Be sure your children are well prepared before they take to the water.

We Can't Resist

In a an article found at The Conversation, Professor Sarah Peverley covers the topic, 'Why we can't resist the lure of mermaids'.

"All of this might give the impression that the world has suddenly gone mer-crazy – but the pre-eminence of mermaids as cultural icons has long been apparent."

The article includes a splash of history as well as how mermaids have become even more popular in recent years. It is well worth a read.

Happy Mermaids

Ali Weinstein's recent film, Mermaids, is currently being shown at festivals in Canada. The film is a documentary about five mermaids, as told by the mermaids themselves.

"A mermaid doesn't need anybody; she doesn't need to call the police. If she needs to get away, she just swims."

The story of these five women makes one point clear, "Mermaids Exist, and They're Happier Than You." Read the full story in an article by Ilana Novick at Vice.

The Mermaid, A Review

A. Gynoid of Second Life would like to share her views of the Chinese movie, The Mermaid.
Hiya Cynthia! Recently watched Steven Chow’s latest movie, The Mermaid (2016). I liked it a lot! If you can appreciate a subtitled foreign language comedy film, I think you would like The Mermaid.
Stephen Chow has made a no-holds-barred wacky comedy. A laugh every minute. A high-budget production pretending to be a low budget production. Makes zero compromises for western audiences. It’s a Hong Kong film for Chinese audiences.
Possibly the best comedy I’ve seen in 10 years, and it’s all about mermaids and stuff.
For more information, check out the movie at IMDB.

Merfolk Walk Among Us

Recently, Riveted editorial board member Diego M. Rodriguez began to suspect that a few of his co-workers might be mermaids.

"But there’s tons of evidence if you look for it, and I’ve decided to share this information with you, dear reader, so that you, too, may be able to identify the mermaids in your life."

Mr. Rodriguez has gathered seven reasons to suspect his co-workers. "Their hair is always perfect", is one example. Check out the other reasons in his fun article.

Myths vs Internet

In an article published in mid May, columnist Sara Coughlin wrote, "Actual Mermaid Myths Are Not At All Like The Mermaids Of The Internet."

"The actual mermaids of myth and legend were not cool. A lot of the time, they were kind of evil."

Read the full story in the article found at Refinery29.

Mermaids Need Your Help

Getty Images
Once again this year, the mermaids need your help. Columnist Katherine Brooks of The Huffington Post is putting out the call: "The Coney Island Mermaid Parade is in trouble."

Putting on a parade of this 'depth' is expensive, along the lines of $50,000 to cover the costs of logistics and security.

Get all the details in Ms. Brooks article, which contains a number of photos from past events. This year's event is scheduled for June 17th, so it is not that far away. At the time of this writing, only $7,200 of the $50K goal has been raised.

Island of Trash

Here is another way you can help the mermaids. Discarded plastics continue to find their way into our oceans and waterways. Nowhere is this more evident than the coastline of Henderson Island in the Pacific. Scientists have estimated that there are 38 million pieces of trash on the island.

"The researchers say the density of trash was the highest recorded anywhere in the world, despite Henderson Island's extreme remoteness."

The one photo in a recent article on Yahoo by AP writer Nick Perry is all you need to see. We have a serious problem.

You can help by recycling plastics at local churches or schools. Pick up plastics, paper, and other trash when you are walking in your neighborhood. Don't let that plastic bottle end up on Henderson Island!

Mermaid Desk Accessories

With the business done, it is time for something fun. Popsugar and Macy Cate Williams recently shared a collection of 15 mermaid desk accessories that any mermaid would love.

"Why not make the place where you work a deep-sea wonderland?"

From pencils to coffee mugs to mermaid tail laptop skins, it's all here! Mermaid scale mouse pads? Yes!

Are unicorn desk accessories of interest as well? There is a related link in the article just for you.

The London Merfolk

In an article found at Londonist, writer Gillian Fisher introduces us to London's Real-Life Mermaids And Mermen. Among them is Merfolk UK convention organizer Jessica Pennington.

Ms. Fisher also introduces us to professional mermaids Aura Bella and Lily Rose, and merman Siki Red.

"Silicon tails cost upwards of £1,500 and are mostly ordered from America. But the UK market is growing and one tail artisan is London-based Siki Red Fins; he's sporting one of his own creations."

Plenty of great photos in the article, so be sure to take a look.

Related blog post: Meet the UK Merfolk (March 2016)

Earth Day Mermaid

In a recent article at Hello Giggles, Ashley Nada reminds us that mermaids celebrate Earth Day because it's their planet, too.

We can no longer wait until Earth Day to care for our planet. Earth Day 2017 has come and gone, but there is still work to be done. Spend an hour or two each month picking up discarded items at beaches, lakes, or around your neighborhood.

You, too, can be an Earth Day mermaid or merman.

Mermaid Tiles

When it is time to redecorate your kitchen or bathroom, add a touch of the mermaid spirit with mermaid tiles. An article at Popsugar has plenty of photos to inspire the decorator in you.

The article by Maggie Winterfeldt features 16 photos of mermaid inspired tile work from Pinterest.

"Previously seen in coastal homes, these scale-like tiles have hit the mainstream, and Pinterest is reporting that interest in mermaid scales is up 100 percent year over year."

My favorite would have to be the kitchen in photo number two.

Making a Splash

A new book, 'Making a Splash: Mermaids (and Mermen) in 20th and 21st Century Audiovisual Media', was released on January 30th. Here are the details:

"Mermaids have been a feature of western cinema since its inception and the number of films, television series, and videos representing them has expanded exponentially since the 1980s. Making a Splash analyses texts produced within a variety of audiovisual genres."

The book's eight chapters include discussions on The Little Mermaid, Mermaid Vocality, The Mermaid Chair, Mermen on the Screen, and much more.

The author of the book is Philip Hayward. Dr. Hayward is editor of the Island Studies journal Shima and holds adjunct professor positions at the University of Technology Sydney and at Southern Cross University in Australia.

Making a Splash is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other booksellers.

Mermaid Bride

The Daily Mail UK brings us an article about a wedding in the 'middle of the sea', the Caribbean Sea to be precise. The bride, Susana, believes she is actually a mermaid, and wanted her wedding to follow her passion.

The article includes a wealth of photos as well as a video. Even the photographer called the wedding, "a dream come true".

In my opinion, the best line from the article is, "Some guests swam to the wedding while others arrived by boat." Looks like the bride wasn't the only mermaid at the wedding.

Mermaid Cake

Our next article comes from Danielle Tullo and Cosmopolitan magazine. If you are having a birthday in near future, or planning a birthday party for a mermaid fan, what you need is a mermaid tail cake.

A photo of such a cake, posted on Facebook, already has over 4.2 million views. Looks like everyone wants one for their very own.

Several photos of mermaid themed cakes are included in the article.

World of Mermaids

Sharon Ko of KENS-TV Channel 13 recently visited with four mermaids based in Austin, Texas to uncover the lure of the mermaid lifestyle.

The article may answer a lot of questions for those wanting to join in the swim. What do I need, how much does it cost, and what happens at public appearances? It's all here in the article.

The MerNetwork forum gets a mention as well.

Mermaid Tail Sleeping Bag

Remember sleep-overs and the boring sleeping bags? No more! Enchantails by Mark Viniello and family brings us the tail-enhanced slumber bag. Inc.com and Kate L. Harrison have the story:

"Their new mermaid slumber bag sets each come with a themed storybook that blends real-life places in the ocean with longstanding mythologies about mermaids from around the globe."

The article includes a portion of an interview with the Viniellos by Inc.com.

Top Mermaid Blogs

I am proud to announce that this blog has been named one of 16 'Top Blogs of 2017' in a recent article. Molly of Everything Mermaid researched over 100 mermaid themed web sites to compile her list of the best.

"I have always loved Mermaids. It started off as a hobby, but the more interaction I get from my 'Mer-friends' the more I realize that there is a whole community out there waiting for connection!"

Check out Molly's entire list in her recent blog post. I am sure you will find plenty of fine reading material. Thank you, Molly!

Fish Girl

Due to come out on March 7th, Fish Girl is a mid-grade graphic novel by illustrator David Wiesner and writer Donna Jo Napoli.

In an article at Entertainment Weekly, columnist Nivea Serrao interviews Mr. Wiesner and Ms. Napoli.

"We both tried for the most realistic story possible. Yes, you have to buy into the idea that mermaids exist. But that’s all."

The article contains three example pages from the graphic novel, the artwork is first rate. Don't miss Fish Girl when it comes out in early March.

Best Mermaid Tails

Sean Fallon of Fashionably Geek recently featured an article entitled, 'The Best Mermaid Tails Money Can Buy'. Mr. Fallon has chosen Etsy seller MerNation as the best there is.

"These custom made tails are crafted from 100% dragon skin platinum cure silicone."

Looking for a top of the line mermaid tail? Been saving your pennies and shells? Be sure to check out Sean's article.

Light Up the Sea

Speaking of high end mermaid tails, how about one that lights up underwater? Sarah Vitak and Makezine bring us the story of a fin-tastic tail created by Erin St. Blaine of North Carolina.

"This project has been three years in the making and has gone through many major revisions to become the beautiful and robust piece that it is today."

Featuring an Arduino microprocessor and a custom smartphone app, this was a serious DIY project. Swim on over and check out the article before you are left in the dark!

Secret Community

The mermaid/merman community in the UK is growing, and Hattie Gladwell at Metro UK would like to introduce everyone to this secret community.

Meet Caitlin Nielsen, better known as Mermaid Cyanea, and her friends Ed, Tessie, and Morgan. Each tells their story of the lure of the sea, and the awkwardness felt on land.

"When I take my tail off it almost feels like a piece of me has come off, that I am in a weird limbo. It’s very vulnerable feeling. It is an odd feeling for sure."

The article includes a number of great photos.

Mermaid Nina

Coastal Living would like you to meet Nina Leipold, otherwise known as The Mermaid of Hilton Head Island, off of South Carolina. Nina is currently educating visitors to Hilton Head on the proper treatment of its wildlife.

"You can see the mermaid in person on a tour with Dolphin Seafari, an area tour operator."

Mermaid Nina is also an author, with two books currently available, and another in the works. Her books echo her teachings of ocean and land conservation.

Nina's husband Rick is a photographer. He works along side her to provide a “Become a Mermaid” experience which includes a photo shoot. Both children and adults can take advantage of this, so dive right in!

Underwater Hotels

In a story by Alex Madison, Digital Trends brings us a review of the five best underwater hotels. While most of us aren't able to afford a night under the sea, the wealth of photos in the article is the next best thing.

"The rooms include 24 hour butler service as well as 24 carat gold infused bars of soap for some reason."

Hungry? The Ithaa Undersea Restaurant is just the thing. A photo can be found at the top of the article, number three in that collection.
