With the success of the mermaid school in Montreal, we hear of the possibility of a sister school in Toronto, Canada.
"When reached about her plans for Toronto, founder Marielle Chartier-Hénault told us she didn't yet have a location but was planning for something by the end of the summer."
For more info on this story, swim on over to BlogTO, and check out the short article. If the comments are any indication, Toronto is more than ready for their own mermaid school.
Lost Voices
The novel, Lost Voices by Sarah Porter, is a different kind of young adult story. Let me introduce you to Luce.
"Luce is a fourteen-year-old orphan who lives a lonely existence with her alcoholic uncle in an isolated Alaskan fishing village."
Find out why this novel is unlike many of the other YA books published in recent years, in this review at Persephone Magazine.
Lost Voices is the first book of The Lost Voices Trilogy. We will be watching for future titles!

Mermaids of Japan
Today, Mysterious Universe brings us an article by Brent Swancer, The Mysterious Mermaids of Japan.
"Mermaid lore is as varied as the many cultures it originates from. As a nation surrounded by the sea, it is perhaps no surprise that Japan too has its own long tradition of mermaids."
The article includes a number of photos and sketches. These mermaids of Japan may not look like what you would expect.
There have been a number of accounts of mermaid sightings in Japanese waters over the years.
"In 1610, a British captain allegedly saw one such mermaid from a pier at the port of Sentojonzu."
The lengthy article makes for interesting reading, though the photos may make for interesting dreams.
Mermaids vs Humans
You know the wise old saying, “The seaweed is always greener in somebody else’s lake.”
An article at Oh My Disney attempts to answer the important question, "Is it better to be a human, or is it better to be a mermaid."
With a little help from Ariel and friends, we tally up the pros and cons. Can you predict the outcome of this very scientific study?

Mako S2 Trailer
This is a subtle reminder that Mako Mermaids Season Two arrives on Netflix on Friday, February 13th. While most of my readers will need no reminding, they may wish for a taste of what is to come.
Below is the Mako Mermaids Season Two official trailer. It is a good sampling of what lies ahead for season two, but it does contain what some may call spoilers. You have been warned.
If you haven't watched season one of Mako Mermaids, you can still find it on Netflix.
Once you have seen an episode or two, write to me and tell me what you like and what you don't. I will share any comments I get in a future blog post. Hopefully, everyone won't watch the entire season in one day. More fun to space them out a little, right?

Mako Mermaids is the sequel to H2O: Just Add Water. They are both popular Australian television programs by Jonathan M. Shiff Productions.

Mermaid Me
Need a special gift for a young mermaid fan? Up for a little crochet? Head on over to Felted Button where you will find the Mermaid Me Crochet Tail.
The crochet tail is by Susan Carlson, and is actually a mermaid-tail shaped blanket. It is perfect for those chilly evenings when reading, doing homework, or watching television. The pattern is $5.50 US, and is available at Ravelry, Etsy or Craftsy. Links can be found in this article by Ms. Carlson.
Mermaid Photographer
Photographer Joe McNally paid a visit to Weeki Wachee Springs, the city of live mermaids, to cross an item off his bucket list: shooting mermaids.
You can find the full story of Mr. McNally's visit at Profoto, where columnist Rebecca Ahremark has the details.
Montana Mermaids
I first talked about the mermaids of Montana's Sip 'n Dip Lounge back in September of last year. Punch recently posted a story on the tiki bar in an article by Sarah Baird.
"Today, a full wall of glass paneling behind the Sip ‘n Dip’s bar reveals an underwater world of (ladies clad as) mermaids who swim, twirl and blow kisses to bar patrons."
If you are ever in the area, be sure to drop by and wave to the mermaids!
Merfest Convention
This year's mermaid convention in North Carolina generated a wealth of press coverage. This story comes from China Daily, and includes a number of great photos. Some you may have seen before.
