Disney Mermaids

Our first story today is about the mermaids in Disney's Peter Pan... the original Peter Pan animated film from the early 1950's.

In a recent article at Deja View, Andreas Deja shares several graphics that show the development of mermaids in the film.

"This cel set-up was made to announce the later arrival of the film during the holiday season of 1952. The background is lovely, but the quality of the drawing and inking leaves a lot to be desired."

Near the end of the article, you can see how actresses were used to preview a scene that influenced how the scene would look in the final animation.

Mermaid Anime

Did a 1975 anime version of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid inspire Disney's Little Mermaid?

"This beautiful Toei Animation film, Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, was part of a Japanese film festival in 1975, and later reached the U.S. in 1979."

Read this short article by Leigh Alexander at BoingBoing and decide for yourself. The article includes a 1 hour, 8.5 minute video which begins with background information on Denmark and Hans Christian Andersen, and ends with the full The Little Mermaid anime.
